Like volunteer drivers, the more we have the lighter the load.
A volunteer coordinator needs to be available for just one hour per day for five days every few weeks. How many weeks will depend on how many coordinators we have. At present we have four coordinators who make themselves available one week in four but additional volunteers will make that even less.
The coordinator requires a smart phone that has a good internet connection at home. If you don’t have a good signal at home then all providers offer some form of facility for Wi-Fi dialling. Vodafone has a gadget that plugs in to the mains socket. Others like EE or Three have an app. You simply download an Android or Apple app to your phone, enter the password and you are ready to go.
When you are on call, between 5pm and 6pm Monday to Friday, calls to the hotline number 01953 433 808 get automatically diverted to your mobile phone. At all other times they go to a message machine for you to pick up when you are on duty.
You call the passenger to obtain full details of the journey requested and then call each driver in turn until you are able to arrange the trip. If a driver says they can’t do the trip then, no questions asked, just accept “No” for an answer and move on to the next driver. You then make a call back to the passenger to confirm that the trip is arranged, the name of the driver and the fee to be paid.
If you would like to help some of your fellow village residents please get in touch – we would love to hear from you. You can call Brian Brooker on 01953 488 477 or enquire using the form on the contact page.
